Abstract: This paper aims to quantity the environmental effects of foreign Joint ventures in China. Based on a unique database of FDI in China, we first examine the environmental characteristics of the domestic Chinese firms selected as partners in the formation of joint ventures (JVs) and find domestic firms with higher pollution intensity enjoy higher probability to be selected by MNEs. Then, to address this negative selection issue, our paper identifies the environmental effects of foreign investment by applying a difference-in-differences approach combined with propensity score matching. We find that JVs will significantly decrease the COD emission intensity of the dirtier target firms. The environmental effects are stronger for JVs in dirtier industry, from developed source countries and in host regions with stringent environmental regulation. The ownership structure and the industry switch also matter, and foreign investment will improve the environment for China major structure, and the JVs remaining the same or switch towards downstream industry. Further, we find that the environmental efficiency of JVs could be raised through the channel of importing more environmental-efficient equipment and cleaner materials.
